Plainfield Student in Spelling Bee Won't Move Forward

Summit Kumar spelled correctly in round 3 but didn't score high enough to move to the semifinals.

While he was able to make it to round three at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Troy Middle School seventh-grader Summit Kumar wasn’t able to gather a score high enough to be entered into the semifinals.

The minimum score needed to advance to the semifinals is 29. In addition to spelling, contestants are also asked to do a vocabulary test.

Kumar had correctly spelled ”flotilla” and “persifleur” during the second and third round, respectively.

Kumar was speller No. 52 and enjoys playing soccer and basketball, according to his Scripps Spelling Bee profile. Kumar’s best subject in school is math and would like to study medicine when he goes to college.
