Plainfield Teacher Fatally Stabbed by Husband Identified

The teacher's husband was later killed after walking into traffic on I-55.


A 47-year-old Plainfield teacher found Tuesday evening with multiple stab wounds after Plainfield police conducted a welfare check at her home has been identified, according to a release from the Plainfield Police Department.

Susan Cunningham, 47, was found at her home on the 25000 block of Prairie Grove Court at 8:07 p.m. The woman was unresponsive and not breathing, according to police. She was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora where she was pronounced dead.

Susan’s husband, Craig Cunningham, is believed to have killed her and died after being struck by two cars on I-55 just north of Route 126.

Susan taught physical education and health at Plainfield High School Central Campus from 2002 to 2006. She was teaching physical education and health at Plainfield North since 2006. She had been on medical leave for the school year.

Plainfield Superintendent Dr. Lane Abrell hired Sue when he was principal of Plainfield Central. Abrell said Sue was a valued member of the staff, great with kids and a very positive person.

“All district 202 employees mourn Sue’s passing,” Abrell said in a statement.

A community vigil will be held at PNHS from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday in memory of Sue Cunningham.
