Plainfield's Ready Set Ride Gets To Stay

A judge agreed this week to throw out an eviction notice for the charity.

PLAINFIELD, IL – A Plainfield charity will get to stay in its longtime home. On Thursday, a Will County judge agreed to vacate an eviction note for Ready Set Ride, which offers therapeutic services to children with special needs. For 15 years, the service has rented property at 13056 Essington Road to house its horses, stable and programs.

Last month, property owner Joseph Tages filed a suit against Ready Set Ride chairman Lisa Afshari in an attempt to evict the charity from the property, which has been in foreclosure since July 2016. Ready Set Ride Vice President Lesley Caramusa said the organization stopped paying its rent in January after authorities showed up to shut off the electricity and water on the property, at which time staff learned of the foreclosure proceedings.

The case is due back in court Aug. 7, according to court records.

Afshari, a Naperville resident, told the Chicago Tribune Ready Set Ride will no longer be evicted on Monday — the original deadline for the group to be off the property — and now has time to work out a deal to pay its rent directly to the mortgage company. Ready Set Ride has also launched a fundraiser to try to raise enough money to purchase the property outright.

As of early Friday, the fundraiser had netted more than $21,000 for Ready Set Ride.

Another property owned by Tages on Lake Mary Drive is also in foreclosure, according to Will County court records. Tages, 71, a former doctor, was indicted on tax and health care fraud charges in 2011 amid accusations he diverted more than $750,000 from an Aurora medical clinic and failed to claim a similar amount on his taxes. His medical license was suspended indefinitely in 2013 after he pleaded guilty to making and subscribing false tax returns.

Ready Set Ride staff took to Facebook to share the news on Thursday, writing, "The eviction has been cancelled!!!!!!!!! We will be going full steam ahead and doing everything we can to get the attention of the bank and see if we can't pull off our final miracle to own our property and have a permanent home! We will utilize our GoFundMe to show the bank we are serious about purchasing if it's possible."
