Register for 'Read to the Rhythm,' Summer Reading Program at the Plainfield Library June 1-4

Plainfield residents of all ages are invited to sign up for the Plainfield Public Library District's nine-week summer reading program.

Plainfield residents of all ages are invited to sign up for the Plainfield Public Library District’s nine-week summer reading program called, “Read to the Rhythm” – a free program that rewards its participants for meeting reading goals.

Summer reading registration week, open to all children, teens and adults, will begin on Monday, June 1 and continue through Thursday, June 4, at the Library’s location at 15025 S. Illinois St. in downtown Plainfield. Registration can be done online at http://il.evanced.info/plainfield/sr/homepage.asp, or by stopping by the Library during registration week. A valid Plainfield Public Library card is required to join the program and registration ends Saturday, July 18.

Over the course of this music-themed reading program, children and teens can earn prizes as they meet the reading goals for their age group. Students in grades 6-12 complete 1,000 pages by the end of the summer, and children ages 3 to 5 complete at least 20 minutes a day of reading. Readers younger than age 3 can also participate by completing reading activities with their parents.

Adults participating in the program can choose a reading goal appropriate for them. Just for registering, adults are automatically entered to win weekly prizes, including free books and $10 gift cards. If adults accomplish their reading goal by the end of the summer, they will be rewarded with a picnic blanket (while supplies last) and be entered to win one of more than 50 gift cards to local stores valued at $25.

“Summer reading is a great way to keep children, adults and teens engaged. It especially benefits children,” said Assistant Library Director Lisa Pappas. “Children who read a minimum of six books over the summer score higher in both reading and math when they return to school.”
