Squad Car Hit On I-55 In Plainfield, 3rd Scott's Law Violation This Year: ISP
A 28-year-old driver from Bolingbrook was cited in the Thursday evening incident and issued two tickets.

PLAINFIELD, IL — An Illinois State Police squad car was hit on I-55 in Plainfield Thursday, violating Scott's Law, officials said.
A 28-year-old driver from Bolingbrook was cited in the incident and issued tickets for failure to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The crash happened at about 5:07 p.m. on the northbound lanes of I-55, north of Lockport Street in Plainfield. A trooper was parked in the left lane with emergency lights activated while conducting a traffic stop. The officer was in the car when a gray 2010 Hyundai Elantra crashed into the left side of the squad car, officials said.

No injuries were reported, police said.
Thursday's crash brings the total of crashes related Scott's Law — which requires drivers to slow down and move over when approaching an emergency vehicle with or without its hazard lights activated — to three in 2023, officials said.

In 2022, ISP experienced 23 crashes related to the law. Eight troopers were injured in the crashes, according to the department.
In a news release Friday, police reminded drivers that those who violate Scott's Law will face a fine of no less than $250 or more than $10,000 for a first offense. If the violation results in injury to another person, the driver at fault will have their license suspended for a mandatory period of anywhere between six months to two years.
