All commissioners attended. The main action taken was to approve a new mission statement. It’s displayed in the two images attached to this post. The revised job description for the executive director was also approved.

My take:
Peter Steinys behaved like a jerk toward everyone. He acts as if staff is holding him back by being inept or lazy, when he’s the one who doesn’t prepare for meetings, doesn’t keep track of his packet materials, etc. He comes up with bad ideas, and then when faced with facts or questions, calls everyone corrupt or a slacker for not applauding instead of pointing out legitimate issues. Then, sometimes at a meeting’s end, he’ll say “good job” as if he’s a low-rent motivational speaker (maybe soon to be “living in a van, down by the river”--that Chris Farley, he was funny).
I really think Steinys might have Asperger Syndrome, or be elsewhere on the autism spectrum. It would explain a lot.
Among his gripes, Steinys hated the mission statement. Steinys was energetic in his objection, but hadn’t found the energy to bring in his ideas for revision. When asked what he’d like to change, after repeatedly trying to shove in a “no tax increases ever” clause, he said it was up to someone else to figure it out. This is stock for Steinys--when he’s been asked what revised wording he’d like on a motion or ordinance he’s fighting, he stammers that it’s up to someone else to come up with that. Why can’t he come to meetings prepared?
During closed session, a few of us were waiting in the foyer and everybody flinched and then went silent when Steinys started screaming and yelling. I heard him--as he’s done several times in the past--threaten to hit someone, to “take it outside”.
If I ever hear or see this happen again, closed session or not, I’ll call the police. Steinys was found guilty not even two years ago of attacking someone over candidate signs, while working for Garrett Peck’s failed senate campaign. He has a propensity for violence and his outbursts have gotten worse. I’m not taking the risk that he’ll physically harm someone. If I feel he’s a threat, I’ll treat him like one and he can talk to a police officer about his love of the outdoors.
The next regular PTPD meeting is on Wednesday, September 9th. Agendas and meeting packets become available here in the few days leading up to the meeting. You can go to the district’s website for info or call them at 815-436-8812.
