Street Closures Expected Ahead Of Hometown Irish Parade, PaddyDay Mile

Locals not attending Sunday's parade or mile race are encouraged to avoid downtown Plainfield between noon and 3 p.m., police said.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Sunday will be a busy one in Plainfield as the locally beloved Hometown Irish Parade is returning to the streets of downtown.

Ahead of the parade, along with the PaddyDay Mile, Plainfield police are alerting residents of upcoming street closures and traffic delays.

The mile run will begin at 12:25 p.m. while the parade will step off at 1 p.m. Police encourage locals not attending either event to avoid downtown Plainfield between noon and 3 p.m. Sunday due to road closures and heavy traffic.

Parade staging will begin at 11 a.m. at Plainfield Central High School, 24120 W. Fort Beggs Drive.

The race will start on Lockport Street near DNA Active Lifestyle Outfitters, 24210 W. Lockport St. The path will travel south on James Street, east on Commercial Street, north on Illinois Street, west on Ottawa Street, north on Des Plaines Street, east on Chicago Street, and west on Lockport Street before crossing the finish line in the outdoor sports store.

Once the run finishes, the roads will be cleared for the parade, which begins and ends at Plainfield Central High School. The procession will travel north on James Street, east on Lockport, south on Illinois Street, and west on Commercial Street before concluding at the high school.

Here's a look at what roadways will close in light of the two events:

Starting at 5 a.m.:

  • Des Plaines Street north of Lockport Street and south Oak Street will be closed for parade bleacher viewing. This area will open shortly after the parade has concluded.
  • Crowd barriers and traffic barricades will be pre-positioned in the downtown area along Lockport Street, James Street, Illinois Street and Commercial Street.
  • Parking along these same streets will be restricted. Vehicles that remain within the parade route will be towed at the owner's expense after 11 a.m.

Starting at 12:15 p.m.:

  • James Street from Fort Beggs Drive to Lockport Street
  • Lockport Street from Main Street (Route 126) to Route 59
  • Illinois Street from Lockport Street to Commercial Street
  • Commercial Street from Illinois Street to James Street
  • Chicago Street from Illinois Street to Fox River Street
  • Ottawa Street from Illinois Street to James Street
  • Des Plaines Street from Oak Street to Ottawa Street
  • Fox River Street from Lockport Street to Commercial Street

All streets will reopen once the parade clears the area, which is expected at about 3 p.m.

Route 59 will not close Sunday, but drivers should expect it to be backed up, police said.

No parking will be allowed along the parade route beginning at 1 a.m. Sunday, according to police. Visitors should plan to park at one of the designated areas: Plainfield Central High School, the village's municipal parking lots on Des Plaines Street, Illinois Street and west Electric Park.

A limited number of Americans with Disabilities Act parking spots will be available on Des Plaines Street north of the alley, which is south of Oak Street.
