What’s up with that name – Toastmasters?

Approximately 100 years ago, when the organization had its beginnings, “toastmaster” was a commonly used term for those who led and spoke at public meetings. Thus, naming the organization “Toastmasters” seemed like a good idea at that time. Today, we practice all types of speaking, not just “toasts” - as we guide and support members in growing their communication and leadership skills.

Who can join Toastmasters – is membership restricted?

Any adult member of the local community or the broader virtual community can join our Bridge Builders Club. We are open to the public – there is nothing closed, restricted, or elitist about our club.

Does a guest have to speak at a meeting?

A guest is invited to share his/her name and how s/he learned about our meetings. That can be done with 20 words or less while seated in a conference room chair or via video (or just audio) on Zoom for our on-line guests. If a guest wants to speak more, there are opportunities for doing so. The choice is strictly up to the guest.
