Rockford bridge repairs delayed until late September (rrstar.com) — If you drive Montague Road or Bypass U.S. 20 in Rockford, expect delays starting Sept. 21 as bridge repairs reduce traffic to one lane with signals. Westbound Bypass 20 will also be narrowed, though one lane stays open, with work expected to wrap up by Oct. 2, weather permitting.
2. Winnebago County inmate death investigated (gazettextra.com) — Rockford residents are learning of another in-custody death at the Winnebago County Jail, the third inmate to die there in just a few weeks. Officials say the latest inmate suffered an apparent seizure before being taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. An independent investigative team is reviewing this and several earlier deaths involving Rockford-area inmates at the same facility.
3. Rockford Fiestas Patrias brings Hispanic Heritage Month back to the community (mystateline.com) — Rockford families can head to the Sports Factory today for the revived Fiestas Patrias festival, a free Hispanic Heritage Month celebration moved indoors because of drizzle. You'll find local food vendors, live music, cultural dancers, bounce houses, and community groups, including Rockford Chess, all focused on creating a family-friendly afternoon in downtown Rockford.
4. UW Health says outlook for Prostate cancer patients is improving (wifr.com) — Men in Rockford are being reminded during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month that outcomes for prostate cancer are steadily improving, thanks to better screening, targeted therapies, and personalized treatment. A UW Health oncologist explains how newer hormone-blocking drugs, genetic testing, and PSMA-targeted therapies are extending lives. Local men are urged to discuss their risks and options with their own healthcare providers.
5. Knox Takes Down Panthers (knox.edu) — Rockford sports fans can mark their calendars for Sept. 26, when Rockford University heads to Knox College for a tri-match starting at 10 a.m. Knox just swept Principia and split with Lyon, showcasing strong setting, serving, and defense. Rockford will join Principia in Memorial Gymnasium, giving local supporters a clear chance to catch the team in action.
