Administrator Salaries: How Do Nearby School Districts Stack Up?

A recent state law requires districts to post an updated list of school chiefs on their websites by Oct. 1. Patch compares Valley View salaries to what administrators are paid in nearby unit districts.

In 2009, Illinois lawmakers approved Public Act 096-0434, which required school districts to annually post itemized salary compensation reports for “every employee in the district holding an administrative certificate and working in that capacity" on or before Oct. 1.

The reports must include base salary, bonuses, pension contributions, retirement increases, cost of health and life insurance, sick- and vacation-day payouts, annuities and any other compensation.

To help readers compare administrators’ salaries in Valley View with those of nearby districts, Patch compiled a chart showing the base salaries as well as pension and insurance contributions for a handful of top-tier administrators in .

Also included are Oswego 308 (portions of Oswego, Aurora, Montgomery, Plainfield, Joliet and Yorkville), Naperville 203 (portions of Lisle, Naperville, Woodridge, Bolingbrook and Warrenville), Plainfield 202 (parts of Bolingbrook, Crest Hill, Joliet, Lockport, Naperville, Plainfield, Romeoville and unincorporated Will and Kendall counties) and Indian Prairie 204 (portions of Naperville, Aurora, Bolingbrook and Plainfield).

The chart also details the number of schools and student population of each district.

Although Valley View and Naperville districts may have the same number of buildings and a similar student population, administrators’ titles and benefits differ—and school districts do not report compensation in a uniform way.

For example, Plainfield reports pension contributions as a percentage of an administrator’s base salary, rather than a dollar amount—and shows health, dental and life insurance as a monthly, instead of yearly, cost.

And while some districts itemize health, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, others either do not report them in the same way or do not offer the same perks. For the purposes of the chart, insurance costs have been summarized in a single category.

We encourage Patch readers to think of the chart as a glimpse into how a portion of their tax dollars are spent on area school administrators’ salaries.
