National Wheelchair Softball Tournament to be Held in Romeoville

The Village of Romeoville is proud to host the National Wheelchair Softball Association Junior World Series Wheelchair Softball Tournament on August 1 and 2 at Romeo Crossing Park (400 W. Romeo Road). Games run from 9 am to 9 pm on 8/1 (no game from 10:30 – noon) and 8 am – 4:30 pm on 8/2. The Championship Game will start at 3 pm. Two local teams will compete, as well as teams from Nebraska, Arizona, and Missouri.

There are not many adaptive sports fields in the United States (26) and only two with lights (Pasadena, TX and Romeoville, IL). The Village is proud to have partnered with the Northern Will County Special Recreation Association to fund, build, and maintain this field to extend opportunities to local residents as well as athletes nationwide who come to play. The field features an accessible surface, dugouts and bleachers designed for individuals who use wheelchairs and other assistive devices. The facility also includes accessible restrooms and an inclusive playground with a rubber surface, sensory play features, slides and wheelchair-accessible swing.

"The lighted adaptive sports field was always a centerpiece in the Romeo Crossing Park project for exactly this reason," said Mayor Noak. "It brings in visitors and business from around the country and gives people a place to play the game they love."

The Lincolnway Special Recreation Association is sponsoring the tournament and fielding a team, making for another local partnership that will benefit this field and its use.
