ROMEOVILLE, IL — Valley View School District's Brooks Middle School hosted the first Boys Leadership and Growth Conference in collaboration with Lewis University on Oct. 5, the District said in a news release.
The conference welcomed educators, community leaders, and eighth grade male students, for a day of inspiration, mentorship and personal growth with the aim of empowering young boys to become strong, confident leaders, the District said.
A keynote address was given by author and spoken word artist, Allen Bryson. Bryson spoke passionately about the importance of young boys excelling in both their personal and professional lives, using spoken word to communicate his message, according to the District.

Various workshops were held throughout the day, including a Q&A session from Robert Harris, assistant professor of organizational leadership at Lewis, and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Harris guided a conversation with two young men who attend Lewis University, who shared their experiences and insights on resilience and success. They shared practical strategies and personal anecdotes to inspire the middle schoolers to step into leadership roles within their schools, families and communities, according to the District.
"Our goal with this conference is to empower our young boys to be leaders, to be confident in their abilities, and to challenge societal norms that may hold them back," Brooks Principal Keith Wood said in a release. "We are incredibly grateful to our speakers and mentors for their dedication to this cause."
