Dedication Set for McCartan Memorial
The Romeoville veterans memorial was recently renamed for a longtime community member, village trustee.
The newly renamed — and now newly remodeled — Edward “Doc” McCartan Veterans Memorial will get an official unveiling next month.
Trustee Ken Griffin announced that a dedication ceremony for the project, which also included beautification and stormwater work along Spangler Road, is set for 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at the memorial.
The veterans memorial is located on Montrose Drive at Route 53 in front of the former site of village hall. The location will also be the site of the village’s Veterans Day commemoration at 10 a.m. Nov. 11.

The monument was named this spring for McCartan, a veteran of the Navy, Marines and the Air Force. A longtime village trustee, McCartan died in January at age 85.
His daughter, Pattie McCartan-Holloway, said she lives near the memorial and has been taking photos of the progress to share with family members who live out of state.

“It’s just awesome,” she said of the site, which includes five granite monuments for each branch of the U.S. military, a brick walkway lined with the names of area veterans and an eagle sculpture.
Though the project is nearly completed, there is still time for community members to purchase a brick paver in honor of a loved one who has served, Griffin said.
