Former Romeoville Church Volunteer Gets Probation in Embezzling Case

Deborah Suchomel paid more than $26,000 in restitution this week.

The former treasurer at Good Shepherd Church was sentenced to probation Monday, three months after she pleaded guilty to stealing from the church and preschool.

Deborah Suchomel, 52, also turned over a check for $26,987.26 in restitution — which represents the amount of stolen money that could be proven by audits, according to the Herald-News.

Suchomel, who was the volunteer bookkeeper for the church’s preschool and served as secretary for the church council, was accused of stealing more than $100,000 over a four-year period.

Woman Pleads Guilty to Stealing from Church, School

A Will County judge on Monday sentenced Suchomel to four years’ probation, as well as 480 hours of community service, and banned her from having contact with the church. Before working with any other non-profit group, Suchomel must also notify the organization that she has been convicted of stealing from a non-profit, the Herald-News reported.
