McAsey Named to Violent Crimes Commission

State representative accepts volunteer appointment; group works to link crime victims with assistance.

State Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Lockport, recently accepted a volunteer appointment to the Illinois Violent Crimes Advisory Commission. McAsey will use her unique experience as a legislator and criminal prosecutor to assist in the commission’s mission of assessing and addressing the needs of crime victims.

“While law enforcement is primarily concerned with apprehending criminals, it is also critical that we give a voice to the victims,” McAsey said.  “The Violent Crimes Advisory Commission works to help crime victims obtain the assistance they require through better, more coordinated efforts by the state of Illinois.”

The 18-member Violent Crimes Advisory Commission is tasked with studying Illinois laws and practices that affect victims of crime and to recommend policies that properly assist the needs of crime victims. The commission also serves as a clearinghouse for public information related to crime victim assistance and will coordinate outreach efforts regarding services available to crime victims.

McAsey is one of two members of the Illinois House of Representatives to serve on the Ccmmission, which also consists of representatives from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, the Secretary of State, the Illinois State Senate and law enforcement agencies.

“As a State Representative, I have worked as an advocate for crime victims and sponsored numerous legislative proposals to better address the needs of victims, including Public Act 97-0572, which allows families of victims killed in traffic accidents to address the court at sentencing,” McAsey said. “My appointment to this commission is an important next step in identifying ways to assist victims of violent crime. I look forward to working with my fellow commission members to craft policies and promote actions to address the needs of crime victims from across the state.”
