Obituary: Marilyn Jean Pounders
As an educator, she was a fierce advocate for her students & their families. She was a joy to others with her warm smile and encouragement.

It is with grateful hearts and profound sadness that we share of the passing of the beloved Marilyn Jean Pounders (formerly Jean Watson) on Friday, September 18, 2026. Lovingly referred to as Jean, she brightened every life that she touched with her warm, genuine love for others topped with her beautiful bright smile that lit up the room until her very last day.
She was born in McArthur, Ohio on January 12, 1935 to Berniece Taylor (nee Edwards) and Clifford Taylor. Jean lived out her childhood in Cleveland, Ohio with her parents and her two younger brothers, Ron and Lowell “Kent”. In young adulthood, she welcomed her daughters, Karen and Sherri. Her daughters and later her grandchildren and great grandchildren became her whole world.

In 1960, Jean started her collegiate journey to become an educator for people with special needs. She started her education at Southern Connecticut State College and continued her at Northern Illinois University after moving to Illinois, by earning a Master’s degree in Education Administration. Jean was a fierce advocate for her students and their families. She fought systems that were made to hold them back and mindsets that hindered them from progressing to meet their potential. Her forward thinking and compassion for all she encountered were boundless. She spent her career teaching in U-46 Elgin School district and became a special education administrator in the Elgin and Kaneland communities.
It was through this career that Jean met some of her closest lifetime friends. As recently as a few months ago she enjoyed a “lunch with the ladies” to catch up with her dear friends Mary Ellen Schaffer, Marge Anderson, Ginny Temple, and Carol Gomien, as well as all of the other “ Door County Crew.” They remained dear friends that Jean cherished through many phases of her life.

In the late 70’s, Jean met and married the love of her life, the late Charles “Chuck” Pounders. They spent many beautiful years living life to the fullest until Chuck’s passing in 2019. Even in the years after his death, Jean’s love for Chuck burned brightly. In her last days, she spoke of seeing his face again in heaven, bringing her great joy.
Along with being a wonderful educator and mother, Jean was grandma (Gram), great grandma (Gigi), and great-great grandma to many. One of her biggest joys in life was cheering on her Illinois grandkids; Dennis, Jamie, and Chelsea in their many pursuits. More recently she found joy in her great granddaughters; her namesake, Edi Jean (Chelsea’s daughter), as well as Naomi and Victoria (Jamie’s twin girls).
In retirement, Jean and Chuck moved to Aberdeen, Mississippi where she was pleasantly surprised to find a wonderful church community at First Presbyterian Church. The church and people of Aberdeen were so welcoming to Jean that she happily made it her home for over 20 years.
In 2021, Jean moved back to Illinois to be closer to more family as she aged. She spent her days at The Pointe in Morris and then at Heritage Woods Assisted Living Community in Minooka where she lived out her days. As she did her entire life, Jean forged friendships with many of the wonderful people that she met at these places. Jean found joy in getting to know her new neighbors. She brought joy to others with her warm smile and encouragement.
During her time back in Illinois, she found great care in the form of her daughter, Sherri and her ex son-in-law, Richard. Both Sherri and Richard provided so much assistance, care, and love to Jean that she wanted to be sure that they knew how grateful she was for them.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Chuck; her granddaughter, Marci and both of her brothers; as well as many other beloved family members and dear friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherri Watson Farrell; her daughter, Karen; her caretaker and friend, Richard Farrell; her Illinois grandchildren, Dennis Farrell, Jamie Cage, and Chelsea Stoltz; as well as many other grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and great friends across the country.
Jean came into this world small but mighty and she left grateful, at peace, and ready to meet God face to face. Though she will be greatly missed by those who loved her, we take solace in knowing that she left this life for an eternity in paradise.
Jean dedicated her life to helping children and she would have loved nothing more than that legacy to be continued in the wake of her passing. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s Research Hospital.
As it was Jean’s wish, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial gathering is being planned by the family at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, Morris, IL.
