Obituary: William D. Kapinus

His generous spirit leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of those lucky enough to call him friend or family.

Obituary was published and funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home and Crematory.

William D. Kapinus

William D. Kapinus “Bill”, age 83 of Mesa, Arizona, and a former longtime Joliet resident, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, August 6, 2025, surrounded by family at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, AZ.

Bill was born in Joliet, IL, on March 22, 1942, a son of the late Elizabeth (Palovcak) and Joseph A. Kapinus. He attended St. Raymond’s Grade School and Quigley Prep Seminary for a short time before graduating with the class of 1960 from Joliet Township High School. While in High School, Bill met his beloved wife Peggy, who was a carhop, and he a cook at the Dairy Castle. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage until her passing in 2018.

In addition to Peggy, Bill is also preceded in death by his sons, Steven and James; his parents, and siblings.

Surviving are his daughter, Chris (Jerry) Lindahl; his son, Dan (Soufi) Kapinus; daughter-in-law, Jiuen Kapinus; grandson, Yosef Kapinus and granddaughterm Emily Kapinus.

Bill, a US Army Veteran, was stationed in Panama serving as a classified communication specialist and was honorably discharged in 1963. He was employed for many years at Exelon (Com Ed) before retiring in 1996. Bill was an active member of the American Legion and the Elks. Bill was also a long-time member and former Governor of the Joliet Moose Lodge.

Bill was actively involved in his Las Alegres community, from participation in community events to serving as president of the HOA for multiple terms. Always willing to lend a hand, Bill was known as the ‘keeper of the keys,’ regularly checking on the homes of his snowbird neighbors. Nicknamed the ‘Airport Uber’, Bill would frequently shuttle friends and neighbors to the airport or medical appointments whenever needed.

Bill looked forward to Sunday dinners with family and friends, and in his spare time, he enjoyed watching old westerns, reading, and attending local theatre productions.

Visitation for Bill will be Monday, August 18, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd. (at Essington Rd) Joliet. Prayers will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, August 19, 2025, at the funeral home to St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church 706 N. Broadway in Joliet for Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Inurnment will follow with Military Honors and committal prayers will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood at 12:00 Noon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name can be made to Fisher House Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
