Patch Picks: Highly Paid Local Officials

Since taxpayers pay their salaries, the annual base pay of local officials is public knowledge. This week's Patch Picks is a sampling of what some local officials are bringing home annually.

Today’s list is a list of some of the most highly paid local officials.

  1. Valley View School District Superintendent James Mitchem takes home $199,000 annually in his new position. He replaced retiring superintendent Phillip Schoffstall in July. Before retiring, Schoffstall was making $245,744 annually.
  2.  Joliet Junior College Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Valerie Roberson receives a base pay of $158,000 annually. In addition, she receives an $18,836 benefits package, 20 vacation days and 15 sick days.
  3. City of Joliet: This year, City of Joliet City Manager Tom Thanas will take home $196,500 as his base pay. He also receives $28,800 into his Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) and $7,500 into a deferred compensation retirement plan. Contractually, Thanas also receives a $6,000 car allowance, about $4,000 for continuing education and $17,500 for life, health and dental insurance premiums.
  4. Will County: Will County Sheriff Paul Kaupas takes home a base salary of $110,923, and will continue to take home the same base salary through 2013. Other elected officials in Will County, including the treasurer, recorder of deeds, county executive, county coroner, clerk of the circuit court, county clerk and county auditor all take home a base salary of $93,116 each, not including pension or benefits.
  5. Illinois Math and Science Academy: Dr. Glenn "Max” McGee, president of the Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA), takes home $231,352.12 as his annual base pay.
