Rain barrels for sale

In another green project, the village is offering 55-gallon rain barrels as a low-cost way for homeowners to recycle water.

Micklevitz said the barrels could be especially useful if this summer proves to be a drought year, estimating that during the hotter months, the average homeowner uses 40 percent of the household water in the yard.

The black barrels are made from recycled food-grade plastic with a valve and screw-off lid fitted with a screen to accept a downspout.

The barrels cost $85 each and can be purchased by calling Village Hall at 815-886-7200. Orders will be delivered within two weeks.

Residents can drop off hazardous household waste and outdated electronics for recycling from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 14, in the Spartans’ Square Parking lot near Route 53 and Phelps.

Residents can drop off items for disposal including oil-based paints, solvents, cleaning products, mercury-containing products, lawn and garden chemicals, fertilizers, fluorescent lightbulbs, antifreeze, old gasoline, used oil and more.

Micklevitz urged those who plan to attend to check the village website for a complete list of accepted items before heading out. A list of prohibited items, including latex-based paints, fireworks and radioactive material, is also on the site.

The event is sponsored by the Village of Romeoville and the Will County Land Use Department Resource Recovery & Energy Division.
