Romeoville High School Earns U.S. News Bronze Award For 3rd Year

U.S. News & World Report just released its 2018 Best High Schools list.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — For the third year in a row, Romeoville High School has been named as a Bronze Medal Award Winner by U.S. News & World Report in their annual rankings of America’s Best High Schools. High schools awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals by U.S. News are then ranked nationally, and within their state, resulting in Romeoville High School being ranked 71st in Illinois, improving on their ranking of 93rd in the 2017 rankings.

“This is a great honor for Romeoville High School,” said Romeoville HS Principal Mr. Derek Kinder. “It is also a reflection of the work done throughout Valley View School District by students to meet the high expectations set for them, and the support that is provided by residents of our District to empower all learners to be college and career ready.”

To develop the rankings, U.S. News reviewed data from over 28,000 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Then, a four-step process was used to determine America’s Best High Schools. The first three steps ensured that the schools serve all of their students well, using their performance on the math and reading parts of their state proficiency tests and their graduation rates as the benchmarks. For those schools that made it past the first three steps, a fourth step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.

This fourth step measured which schools produced the best college-level achievement for the highest percentages of their students. This was done by computing a College Readiness Index (CRI) based on the school's Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate participation rate – the number of 12th-grade students in the 2015-2016 academic year who took at least one AP or IB test before or during their senior year, divided by the total number of 12th-graders at the school – and how well the students performed on those tests.

A closer look at the state rankings show that Romeoville High school ranks 26th in Illinois among non-charter high schools that are part of unit (K-12) districts and third among high schools located in Will County after Neuqua Valley in Naperville and Lockport Township East Campus, both Silver Medal winners.

Editor's note: High schools in nearby Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 and Joliet Township High School District 204 were unranked on this year's U.S. News list, as was Bolingbrook High School (Valley View School District).
