Romeoville HS Senior Chosen For The United States Senate Youth Program

Senior Elani Trejo is one of two students in the state chosen for the program.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — A Romeoville High School student has been chosen for the United States Senate Youth Program, and will join Senator Richard Durbin and Senator Tammy Duckworth in representing the state during the 64th annual USSYP Washington Week in March, according to a news release.

Elani Trejo of Romeoville is among two students from Illinois who will join the delegation. The other Illinois student is Makaylah Barnes Adams of Decatur, according to a news release.

Trejo will head to Washington D.C. for a week-long study of the federal government, meeting with senators, the President, a Supreme Court Justice and other officials, a news release states. Trejo will also receive a $10,000 college scholarship.

Trejo is a senior at RHS, and also serves as the President of Student Leadership, according to the USSYP. She is a VVSD Board Ambassador (the first Latina in this role), a 4-year president of Key Club and the Latin American Student Organization.

Trejo has also interned with State Rep. Dagmara Avelar, assisting with community outreach and legislative research, according to a news release.
