Romeoville Police Offer No Arrest, No Cost Rehab For Addicts

Those addicted to drugs or alcohol can go to Romeoville police to get treatment started without any cost or fear of arrest.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — If you or somebody you know is addicted to drugs or alcohol, Romeoville police are offering some help. The Safe Passage program offers those struggling with addiction a chance to get clean without fear of arrest.

Effective Nov. 1 2018, this program is designed to get people into formal treatment programs with the help of the police. It's confidential, too, and offers help to those with or without insurance.

It's easy, confidential, free, and those taking advantage of it won't be arrested. "You or someone you know could be one use away from a lost life. Don't wait. Seek help now!" police said in a release announcing the program.

Here's how it works. The person seeking help can go to the Romeoville Police Department and will chat with a cop and the police department's social worker. They'll fill out a waiver and a brief questionnaire which the experts will use to decide what sort of treatment is necessary.

Romeoville police say they've responded to 59 overdose calls, including 17 overdose deaths, in the past three years.
