Romeoville Woman Lost Pregnancy After Getting Zika Virus

The woman, one of 3 confirmed Illinois cases, vacationed in Honduras while pregnant and says virus may have contributed to a miscarriage.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — A Romeoville woman claims she contracted the Zika virus while on vacation in Honduras, which may have resulted in a miscarriage.

In an interview with WGN TV, Samantha Mejia, 30, said she and her husband Omar first heard of the Zika virus while in Honduras.

Upon their return to the states, Samantha began to exhibit flu-like symptoms and a rash, according to WGN.

A blood test sent to the CDC confirmed it was the Zika virus.

While she feels fine now, and doctors say she may be immune to the virus due to contracting it, an ultrasound revealed she had a miscarriage, but doesn’t know if it’s because of the virus.

According to the CDC, the Zika virus is spread through mosquito bites, with symptoms of the disease being fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis.

“The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week,” according to the CDC’s website.
