State Rep. McAsey Addresses Changes in Disabled Parking Program

State Rep. Emily McAsey is encouraging seniors who participate in the Disabled Parking Program and their caregivers to attend a discussion on changes to the program that will take effect in January. The meeting is being held on Thursday, October 24 from 10 a.m. at the Romeoville Branch of the White Oak Library District located at 201 W. Normantown Rd. in Romeoville.

“For too long people have been abusing the disability parking program to avoid paying for parking,” McAsey said. “A new law will soon take effect, cracking down on those who take advantage of the disabled in Illinois. I encourage residents who want to learn how these changes might affect them to attend this meeting.”

Senate Bill 1929 amends requirements for the issuance of parking decals for disabled persons, limiting free parking at meters and parking structures to permanently disabled persons at meters and other parking areas only. The law takes effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

In addition to individuals using the Disabled Parking Program, law enforcement, physicians, elected officials, business owners,  community service providers and others who serve the disabled are encouraged to attend this meeting as well. Officials from Will County TRIAD and Secretary of State Jesse White’s office will attend and answer questions.
