VVSD Students Qualify for State Wrestling Finals

Athletes will compete at the state finals at Northern Illinois University.

Nine middle school student-athletes qualified for the March 9 and 10 Illinois Elementary School Association’s state wrestling finals in DeKalb with top three finishes in sectionals at Hinsdale South High School this past weekend. Four of the wrestlers won their divisions.

The combined Lukancic/Martinez Middle School team led the way with two winners: eighth-graders Daniel Carreno (155 pounds) and Kammeran Hughes (167 pounds), and two other state qualifiers: eighth-grader Geo Dekire (2nd at 112 pounds) and Martinez eighth-grader Steven Moon (3rd at 100 pounds).

eighth-grader Josh Alexander was the sectional champ at 135 pounds, while eighth-graders Jack Kayhart (3rd at 199 pounds) and Rafael Gonzalez (3rd at 167 pounds) also qualified.

 seventh-grader Trevell Timmons won the 112 pound weight class and eighth-grader John O’Brien qualified by finishing 2nd at 85 pounds.

The state finals will be held at the Convocation Center on the Northern Illinois University campus.
