SHOREWOOD, IL — Around the village of Shorewood, property owners know that the junkers are like out vultures, they are circling practically every subdivision on Sundays and Mondays often revisiting the same neighborhood multiple times. As a result, one small child had his bicycle taken by mistake and that's when four officers at the Shorewood Police Department stepped up above the call of duty.
According to the agency, on Sunday night, Officers DeLira, Harker, Smicker and McDaniel turned an unfortunate situation into a very special for one young child in Shorewood.
The department informed everyone on Facebook that "after a bicycle was mistakenly taken as part of a trash collection, our young resident met with several of our officers who learned about the unexpected loss. Rather than simply accepting the situation, the officers collectively pooled their own money to replace the bicycle and went a step further by purchasing a properly fitted bicycle helmet to help ensure the rider's safety.
"We are proud of Officers DeLira, Harker, McDaniel and Smicker, not only for the work they do every day but for the compassion and kindness they show when no one is asking them to. This is what community policing looks like."
