SHOREWOOD, IL — A 71-year-old Shorewood man who has been the long-time owner of the Bullpen Sports Bar drinking establishment on Route 59 near the DuPage River was hiding a gun inside his pocket as he put up a fight during his arrest during the early morning hours of Sunday, according to Shorewood Police Department arrest logs.
The agency said the incident unfolded at 2:01 a.m. According to the police department, bar owner Jerry Borrego, who comes from the 700 block of South Raven Road, Shorewood, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and resisting a peace officer.
The police department indicated that the overnight shift officers were dispatched to the Bullpen Sports Bar for gun complaints. Officers saw a group of people standing near the entrance of the Bullpen, and the bar patrons indicated that the bar owner, Borrego, had a gun.
Officers ordered Borrego to put his hands on top of his head; he declined, the agency noted. Officers then tried to place his arms behind his back, but Borrego became stiff and rigid. Borrego continued to not listen to commands as the officers detained him and placed handcuffs on his wrist, according to the arrest report.
Officers said they saw the black Springfield Hellcat inside Borrego's right pocket. Following the booking and processing at the Shorewood Police Station, Borrego was later released with court information, the agency pointed out.
Years ago, the bar was known as the Ron's Sports Lounge.
