Developer Eying Old Joliet Prison, Mayor Says

Details are sketchy on what the former Joliet Correctional Center would be used for, but the city would need to get control of the property make it happen, Tom Giarrante said.

Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante announced Wednesday that a prospective developer is eying the shuttered Joliet Correctional Center.

The deal is described as preliminary, and is contingent on city officials persuading the state to relinquish ownership of the former prison at 1125 Collins St. to the city so a deal can be made, according to a story in the Joliet Herald News.

“We have someone who is very interested in that prison,” Giarrante told the paper. “He has some great ideas. But first we need the state of Illinois to turn that property over to us so we can work with that person.”
