Gas Leak On River Road Prompts Business Evacuations
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. Saturday.

SHOREWOOD, IL - If you were driving along U.S. 52 and River Road on Saturday morning, you saw the intersection blocked by several Shorewood Police cars as well as fire trucks and ambulances from the Troy Fire Protection District. It turns out there was a gas leak along River Road around 8 a.m. in an area where several cranes and pieces of construction equipment were working.
A Shorewood Police officer told Patch at the scene that authorities evacuated the nearby CVS Pharmacy and the Gas N Wash Shorewood at 1201 West Jefferson Street for precautionary reasons. A portion of River Road going toward Seil Road was closed while authorities were busy investigating the gas leak.
Around 8:30 a.m., Shorewood Police said that Nicor officials were notified of the gas leak and en route to the scene. The gas station and pharmacy are expected to reopen sometime today, perhaps even this morning, once officials deem the area is safe.
