SHOREWOOD, IL — A 22-year-old woman who has been living at the EconLodge hotel along the northeast frontage road in Shorewood has been released from the Will County Jail, even though Will County prosecutors argued Marlianyle Velasquez-Uzca stabbed a man in the neck and threw his clothes off the balcony during a violent outburst over the weekend.

Shorewood police were originally called to the Econo Lodge at 12:43 a.m. early Saturday and then again at 3:11 a.m. As a result of the incident, Velasquez has been charged by Will County prosecutors with aggravated battery and two counts of domestic battery.

Assistant State's Attorney Katie Rabenda argued Velasquez should be held in the county jail under the SAFE-T-Act, but new Will County Judge Zachary Pollack disagreed.

Shorewood police interviewed the victim in the middle of the night this past weekend, and he told them Velasquez threw his clothes off the balcony once Shorewood police left the EconoLodge after the first domestic disturbance call.

Shorewood officers did find the man's clothes on the ground under the balcony. The victim told them that Velasquez charged at him with a knife, punched him and kicked him all over his body. Officers saw puncture holes to his jacket, plus cuts from the knife to his neck, shoulder and bicep.

The small kitchen was recovered by police and photos were taken of the man's injuries, plus his jacket.

At the time of her arrest, Velasquez told Shorewood police that she punched the man about six times all over his body with her fists and she charged at him with the knife, but she did not know if she cut him, court records show.

"She admitted to being the aggressor in the incident. She couldn't explain why she attacked him," prosecutor Rabenda informed the new judge.

Rabenda also informed the judge that Velasquez is "pending a charge for being an inadmissible alien" for which she was arrested on Dec. 23. Velasquez "did not have a permanent address and listed the EconoLodge as her address," court files show.

Although Judge Pollack ordered Velasquez released from the Will County Jail, the judge has ordered her to stay away from the stabbing victim, and she must stay away from the Shorewood EconoLodge "until further order of the court."

The criminal complaint indicates that Velasquez cut the victim "about the neck," cut the victim "about the body," and struck the victim "about the body."

Velasquez must return to the Will County Courthouse on Feb. 29 in front of Judge Dave Carlson in Courtroom 405.
