Joliet Central High School Archives Committee to Hold Special Plaque Unveiling & Video Preview Honoring Dorothy B. Crombie

A special plaque unveiling and video preview honoring Dorothy B. Crombie will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24.

A special plaque unveiling and video preview honoring Dorothy B. Crombie will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24 at the JCHS Steelman Statue, 201 E. Jefferson Street in Joliet. The event is free and open to the public.

Mrs. Crombie will be honored posthumously for her work in preserving and presenting the history of Joliet Central High School. As an Archive Committee leader for over 25 years, she collected school-related materials and completed extensive research which revealed many details of the school’s rich heritage. In 1982, Mrs. Crombie delivered the presentation that resulted in the Central Campus’ placement on the National Register of Historic Places. She is an honorary 1986 graduate of Joliet Central High School.

“Without Dorothy Crombie’s continuous and dedicated research, there would be literally no accurate accounting of the history of JTHS,” said JCHS Archives Member Tony Contos. “Her work corrected and/or validated many of the stories that had been passed on through the years. Her discoveries were true treasures and gifts for the graduates and community to enjoy.”

The Archives Committee has dedicated their historical tribute video “To Thee We’ll E’re Be True” to Crombie in honor of her support and commitment to JTHS. The film will debut at the ceremony on June 24. It details the ever changing construction, grand architecture, antique artwork, and origin of the one-of-a-kind Steelman mascot. Viewers will be taken on the journey of the original campus, erected in 1901, to the present day. Century old photos of the building, classrooms, and students, are intertwined with stunning high-definition views of the current façade, highlighting the rich art and history of Joliet Central. Copies of the video will be available for purchase for $15.

Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP attendance to Principal John Randich at (815) 727-6741 or email jrandich@jths.org.
