JTHS Broadcasting Programs Receive State-of-the-Art Technology, Training From Renown BBC Broadcasting Specialist

New technology for the Steelmen and Tiger Student News Networks came with training sessions from a renowned BBC veteran.

New technology for the Steelmen and Tiger Student News Networks came with training sessions from renowned veteran BBC Broadcasting Specialist Brian Sterling-Vete last week.

Sterling-Vete provided hands-on training to the students and participated in mock broadcasts to test the new state-of-the art equipment. Training and implementation support is provided by the COTG company to clients purchasing new technology, but the students were not expecting to learn from an award-winning industry professional of Sterling-Vete’s status.

Steelmen News Network and Tiger News Network are student run broadcasting programs that allow students deliver school news and announcements to the student body.

Sterling -Vete has been a TV Personality, broadcaster and host all over the world. He has appeared on the BBC, ITV in the UK and internationally on Alpha TV in Greece, RTL TV Germany and Holland. He has won the Royal Television Society Awards and Creative Excellence Award four years in a row. In addition, Sterling-Vete is also an English author, Guinness World Record Holder, motivational speaker, film and television actor, stunt performer, martial arts expert and entrepreneur.

“Working with Brian Sterling-Vete was truly amazing,” said student Tiger News Network anchor and technician, Abasi Kelley. “I was unaware that he would be present during the TNN training session, so seeing him was a bit of a shocker.”

Kelley is in his senior year at West and plans to pursue a career in the television broadcasting and media fields. “I feel that my experience with Sterling had a profound impact on me because I want to go into the field of broadcasting as well as acting. Due to Sterling being a TV broadcaster and an actor, I now know what it is like work with a person in the fields that I want to pursue.” Kelley also commented on the skills he developed through his participation in the TNN program. “Being on TNN has allowed me to experience how it would be to anchor and produce an authentic news montage.”

The new supplies for each school include video cameras, 24in ultra sharp monitors for previewing and working on video content, microphones, green screens and other essential equipment. The new equipment will be used to benefit the TNN and SNN programs in many ways. Kelley believes the TNN and SNN crew members will now get a hands-on feel for what it is like to work with industry news equipment to produce student news in a more professional manner.

Learning from an industry professional, such as Sterling-Vete, gave students an inside look at broadcasting field.

“What I learned is that this field is ever changing along with the technology, therefore one must keep up with how the technology works. I was taught that a relaxed nature, along with knowledge of the behind the scenes is something very common among talent in this field. Working with someone well-regarded and known in the film industry as a high school junior is definitely a unique and treasurable experience,” said TNN student-producer, Maxwell Rosa.

Rosa, who has participated in the TNN program since his sophomore year, believes that the new equipment will greatly benefit the student-produced news program. He noted that they can now produce more modern and professional productions. “Our program can now reflect what an actual broadcast should be like, the only difference being that it is run by high school students.”
