Man Fatally Shot in Joliet Collapsed in Grocery Store After Asking for Ambulance: Police

The 20-year-old man was pronounced dead at 7:40 p.m. Dec. 16.

JOLIET, IL — An Aurora man was fatally shot Wednesday evening in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Jeevit Rai, 20, was pronounced dead at 7:40 p.m. Dec. 16 at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Rai sustained a gunshot during an apparent homicide in the 100 block of South Briggs St. in Joliet.

Police Chief Brian Benton said the man had walked into Jam Food Mart located at 105 South Briggs Street and asked for the clerk to call him an ambulance before collapsing on the floor.

Police said there was also a bike outside the store at the time, but couldn’t confirm that Rai had been riding it.

Benton also confirmed that witnesses heard shots ring out at around 6:05 p.m.

No motive has been established, nor do they have any suspects, Benton said.
