McGuire takes challenge at Heritage Woods in Bolingbrook.

State Sen. Pat McGuire (D-Crest Hill) showed his support for ALS awareness last week while visiting Heritage Woods assisted living community in Bolingbrook. In addition to presenting flowers to assisted living seniors with upcoming birthdays, McGuire also participated in the social media phenomenon known as the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

“A close friend of mine since second grade lost his mother to Lou Gehrig’s disease,” McGuire said. “Now his cousin has it. Money donated to help those afflicted with ALS and to help find a cure for ALS is money well spent.”

This fundraising effort, which has gone viral in the last six weeks, uses the hash tag #IceBucketChallenge. It has attracted millions of followers, who willingly drop ice water on themselves and then encourage their friends on social media to do the same.

From July 29 through Sept. 5, the ALS Association has received more than $109 million in donations, compared to approximately $3 million during the same time period last year. Donations have come from existing donors and from over two million new donors to The Association.
