SHOREWOOD, IL — A 31-year-old man in Shorewood who prosecutors say keeps trying to strangle the same woman is now being held in the Will County jail after Will County Judge Donald DeWilkins determined Edwin Simanis should not be granted pretrial release.

Prior to this week's latest arrest of Simanis, the defendant's victim obtained an order of protection from the Will County judges in August.

She wrote, "I am requesting an order of protection against Edwin because I am scared to death of him. I was going to work and we were fighting. I got in the car to go to work, and he wanted to keep talking and was very aggressive. He grabbed my wrist and spun me around, trying to put my arm behind my head.

"And he pushed my face into the driver's seat," the Shorewood woman stated in her order of protection petition. "I passed out, and he kept pushing harder ... I went to the hospital because the bone in my shoulder was sticking out, and Edwin said he did that to me and suggested I go to the hospital."

After going to the St. Joe's hospital, Shorewood police were notified, and they later conducted a wellness check "at our house and told me I need to get out of the house immediately. He was arrested last night and is currently in the Will County Jail."

Back on Aug. 14, Shorewood police charged Simanis with one count of aggravated domestic battery and seven counts of domestic battery. In that case, Simanis remained in the Will County Jail from Aug. 13 through Aug. 19. He was released upon paying 10 percent of his $30,000 bail. Now, cash bail is gone in Illinois and judges decide whether to order the criminal defendant detained or let them go.

Then, this week, Shorewood police arrested Simanis once again on more felony domestic battery charges, involving the same victim as his August incident.
