Shorewood Marine Severely Wounded

A Marine from Shorewood suffered severe wounds while serving in Afghanistan, Mayor Rick Chapman said during Tuesday night's board meeting.

"We all feel pride," Chapman said of the wounded Marine, who he said is a "long-time resident of Shorewood.

"He's the first one (from Shorewood) that I'm aware of with debilitating injuries," the mayor said.

Chapman declined to identify the Marine out of respect for his family's privacy but said he intends to plan a homecoming event to pay tribute and welcome the wounded man home.

"He's going to be honored," said Chapman, who served in a Navy helicopter crew in the Vietnam War. "I'm going to try."

The wounded Marine is now at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He was joined there by his mother, Chapman said.

"His morale is great," he said.

The mayor was not certain when the Marine was wounded but believes it happened recently.

"His only wish is his prosthesis allows him to squeeze a trigger so he can go back," Chapman said. "My kind of guy."
