Troy School Asks Public For Help With Coin Drive

The William B. Orenic Intermediate School Young Achievers Service Club is asking the public to help them with their goal of raising $5,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through a coin drive.

“Pennies for Patients” is an annual fundraiser the club hosts at the Troy Community School District 30-C school, where students, staff and the community come together to donate loose change or dollars throughout January that the club then donates to cancer research.
Last year, the club’s goal was $4,500, but they actually raised more than $6,000 for the cause. This year, according to sponsors Alison Radek and Sheila Freese, the students set their goal higher.

The club’s members are sixth graders, chosen by the school’s teachers and made eligible by their grade point averages.
Member Michael Knapik said the fundraiser is especially important to him personally, as two of his uncles had cancer. Harmony Amegashie said she feels the fundraiser is important in that the dollars raised might help a young cancer patient feel like a normal kid again.
“This year,” Radek said, “the son of W.B.O. teacher Nicole Voelz is our honorary hero. Last March, Lukas was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This fundraiser now holds an extra special place in the hearts of WBO staff and students.”
The Young Achievers students also benefit from organizing the fundraiser by learning about community service and selflessness. Through the campaign, they build skills of leadership, cooperation, planning and organization.
Members of the public who wish to donate to the campaign may drop their coins or bills off in the front office of William B. Orenic Intermediate School, 5820 W. Theodore Street, Plainfield, through January 31. Donations may also be made online at https://events.lls.org/pages/il/Troy-OrenicIntermediateSchool-2020.
