9-Year-Old Fatally Shot In Skokie Identified

A 5-year-old also suffered a graze wound.

SKOKIE, IL — A 9-year-old boy was fatally shot, and a 5-year-old suffered a graze wound in a Skokie apartment early Saturday morning, police said. On Saturday night, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the 9-year-old as Jeremiah Ellis, who lived in the building.

Offices responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired just after midnight at an apartment building in the 4700 block of Main Street.

Inside the building, police found Ellis, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and a 5-year-old with a graze wound.

Officers began life-saving measures on the 9-year-old until Skokie firefighters arrived. Both children were taken to a local hospital, where Ellis died, police said.

Editor's note: Skokie police initially said the child who was wounded was 6 years old. Authorities have since clarified that the child is 5 years old.
