Many scholars agree that he was the smartest of the
Founders; many also argue that he was the wisest. What seems increasingly clear
is that only Alexander Hamilton truly grasped the "big picture" of
the nation that was to be. And no element of that vision was as creative or as
controversial as his conception of the National Bank. With the help of his
extraordinary biographer, Ron Chernow, we will try to get to know the mind,
heart, and tragic end of the “national mind.” No class February 20.
