SKOKIE, IL — Skokie police will be looking for seatbelt violations throughout the month of May as part of the nationwide "Click It or Ticket" campaign.
Officers will conduct high-visibility enforcement day and night through May 26, focusing on seat belt violations, officials announced. Motorists who aren't wearing their seatbelts will be ticketed.
“Buckle up every trip, every time,” said Sgt. Melissa Russell. “Seat belts save lives, and we are committed to keeping our roads safe.”
According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, 22,713 people were killed in accidents in 24, and 48 percent of them didn't have their seatbelts buckled.
Illinois law requires all drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts.
The “Click It or Ticket” initiative is funded with federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
