SKOKIE, IL — The Skokie Police Department shot rubber bullets at a man armed with a butcher knife after he threatened to kill officers Tuesday night, the department announced.

Officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the 9200 block of Lorel Avenue at 8:41 p.m. Responding officers located a man in front of the residence who was holding a butcher knife.

Skokie police secured the area around the man and attempted to de-escalate the situation, according to the department. Crisis Intervention Trained staff and Tactical Intervention Unit members also attempted to de-escalate.

"During this communication, the person threatened to kill Skokie Police and appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis," police said in a statement.

While authorities negotiated with the man, members of the community gathered nearby to observe.

According to police, shortly before 9:30 p.m. the man began to move toward an area that police believed was unsafe for bystanders and police. At that time, police chose to deploy less-lethal 40mm rubber rounds designed not to break skin.

The man was secured by police and transported to a nearby hospital to treat his injuries.

"The Skokie Police Department reminds community members that, although it is tempting to watch a live event unfold, please maintain a safe distance while emergency responders handle the situation," the Skokie Police Department said.

Investigation into the initial report indicated that it was a domestic-related incident with no criminal charges at this time.

Anyone who may have additional information about the incident was urged to contact the Skokie Police Department at 847-982-5900.
