Niles North High School student Eric Rosen, the reigning National K12 Chess Champion, competed at the 2011 World Youth Chess Championships held November 17 through 27 in Caldas Novas-Goiás, Brazil. Rosen competed in the Under 18 Open section, in which there were 99 players, and finished in ninth place in the nine-round competition, although he was in medal contention throughout the tournament. He finished with four wins, four draws and one loss, to the number one seed from Armenia, and the ultimate winner in his section. Rosen faced opponents from Brazil, England, Switzerland, Mexico, Latvia, Colombia, United Arab Emirates and Armenia.
Rosen also earned his first qualification norm for an International Master title; a player needs three norms to qualify for the title.
