NorthShore University HealthSystem Glenbrook Hospital Unveils New Susan Barney Atrium Café at Dedication Event

On Wednesday, November 28, NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) Glenbrook Hospital proudly unveiled the new Susan Barney Atrium Café with a dedication event. More than 80 physicians, care providers and administrative leaders attended the event, along with Barney family members and friends whose generosity enabled the Café’s creation.

Heralded by all who knew her as a loving, strong and selfless woman, mother and teacher, Susie lost her courageous eight year battle with cancer on September 1, 2011. In an effort to inspire, encourage and help others defeat cancer, Susie’s children and husband led the dedication of the Café  in her honor.

This new Café will serve as a gathering place for patients and their families to share a meal or find refuge within the Hospital. In addition to establishing the Café, the family’s generosity will enhance leading-edge medical research at NorthShore Kellogg Cancer Center, a multi-specialty center offering a wide range of initiatives designed to improve cancer prevention, detection and treatment. With a focus on translational research, the Barneys’ support will help ensure that the most promising breakthroughs in the lab are translated into clinical studies that can provide immediate benefit for NorthShore patients.

“We thank the Barney family for their exemplary vision, commitment and generosity to NorthShore,” said Sean O’Grady, President of NorthShore Glenbrook Hospital. “The Barneys’ gift is an investment in potential, and shows their belief and hope in the development of new treatments and cures. It is fitting that this gift is in honor of Susie, a teacher, as it will help our physicians and researchers learn and better understand how to prevent and, we hope, cure cancer.”
