Skokie Police Department Dedicated to School Safety

In light of the horrific tragedy in Newton, Connecticut, the Skokie Police Department wishes to assure the community that the Department is committed to providing the
resources necessary to ensure safety in all Skokie schools.

“While no one can guarantee safety against maniacal acts of violence, the community can be assured that the Skokie Police Department, through a coordinated effort with
local school districts and the Skokie Fire Department, maintains and continues to evaluate each individual school district’s safety plan,” said Police Chief Anthony Scarpelli.  “As is occurring in many communities across the nation, we are re-evaluating past practices.  The Departments’ extensive and ongoing emergency response training, which includes lockdown drills and other highly detailed procedures, is well worth the continued effort.”

In early January, the Skokie Police Department will invite administrators from all Skokie schools to a school safety and crisis plan review meeting.  The Village works closely with all Skokie school districts, and currently has School Resource Officers at four Skokie schools and also implements other security measures to ensure school safety.

“The Skokie Police Department promises the community that we will continue to dedicate our efforts and expertise to the safety of Skokie schools, and safety in the entire
community,” said Scarpelli. “If residents ever have a safety concern or observe suspicious persons near a school or anywhere in the Village, they should contact 9-1-1 immediately.  My colleagues and I appreciate the community’s support for the work we do each day to ensure
public safety.”
