"Ask Debbie Sue" Dating advice with Author & Comedian Debbie Sue

'Dating Advice' with Author & Comedian Debbie Sue Goodman

I hope everyone is having a good month. It's finally warming up outside. I hope all the dads' out there had a wonderful Father's Day. I always enjoyed writing poems & songs. In this column I'm enclosing a poem. Many readers have asked me when I started to enjoy writing & how I became good at writing rhymes. My answer would be- I always enjoyed writing my thoughts down on paper. I find that it's very good at the end of the day to write down how my day went on that particular day. I remember my aunt telling me when I was a little girl that she always kept a diary. She bought me one to write down my thoughts. So, I started to write at a young age. I wrote poems to my family for special occasions. When something sad happened, I wrote a poem about the sadness. I wrote poems to my mom for many years before she passed. For everyone that lost their dads & to mine up in heaven.. Here's a poem from my first book, 'Still Single.'

My Wonderful Dad

My Dad passed away,
There was so much more I wanted to hear him say.
My life is in such disarray,
'Missing him and loving him,' is all Mom & I can say.

The doctors couldn't share,
In our utter dispair.
Our heart break cuts like a knife,
Who could feel this pain more than a daughter and a wife?
To the hospital our sadness is really quite trite,
He really held on and put up a good fight.

A part of me died with him when he passed away.
It left me scared and afraid.
I miss him. He was someone you could love and trust,
In his life he added humor and laughter to everything, to him-that was a must.
Our love for dad was more than anyone could comprehend,
The man was really more like a friend.

All the sympathy that our family and friends have sent, we hope our hearts will mend.
Our love for him will always transcend.
I hope from up above he watches mom & I,
And soothes us every time we cry.
We'll try to shake off the fear,
Of not seeing you or having you near.
Father and husband, you were so dear.

Many of my female readers wrote to ask my opinion about dating an older man. A couple of ladies said their families don't approve of their relationship with an older man. I always say that age doesn't matter when you're dating someone. If you enjoy their company, then age should not be a deal breaker. Explain to your family that it's your life & only YOU can decide for yourself who you want to spend your time with.

Here's a cute story that I've had in my 'Dating Dilemmas' shows. I was in my early 20's. I asked my mom what she thought about a guy I was going to go out with that I met at the health club. He was 20 years older then me. He gave me his photo and his phone number. Here's the story..

' Mom, I met a nice guy while I was at the health club. We've talked several times there. We had juice together after our work-out. He invited me out to dinner. He gave me his photo & his phone number. He's a bit older. I'd like your opinion if I should go out with him. Take a look at his photo.'

My Mom replied, 'I'm not looking at his photo.'

I said, 'Why not? I really value your opinion. I just want to know if you think he's too old for me.'

My Mom said, 'I refuse to give my opinion. Because if I do, you'll be upset.' (Turns her head away.)

I replied, 'No, I promise I won't be upset. I really want you to tell me this time. Take a look at his photo.' (I showed her the photo) 'Do you think he looks old enough to be my father?'

My Mom looks at the photo and says, 'No, He's not old enough to be your father.'

I said, 'Oh, Good.'

Mom replies, 'He's old enough to be your- GRANDFATHER!'

Until next time...

Keep Smiling!
