There are four stages of learning for a dog:

Acquisition: Language development. Words are nothing more than meaningless sounds to a dog.

Automatic: The language becomes a signal to the dog. We made the sound meaningful to the dog.

Generalization: The dog learns to apply what was learned to other people, places, or things.

Maintenance: The dog has become conditioned to respondent to a stimulus (for example, the "sit" signal) in a certain in way. Observable changes in Fluffy's behavior show you learning has taken place. You say "sit" and he does.
