On the Beat at the Motor City Comic Con

Cuzz Gekas and I enjoyed a weekend of pop culture fun at the Motor City Comic Con.

My friend Cuzz Gekas and I spent the weekend enjoying celebrities, comics and other pop culture fun at the Motor City Comic Con.  I have been going to the MCCC for nine years and Cuzz has joined me for the last four.

The MCCC had some issues involving traffic and entrance lines, but that did not detract from the fun that we had.  We just figured that the popularity of the convention caused more attendees than expected.  Despite the crowd, the staff of MCCC was very helpful any time we had questions.

I have read criticism concerning various aspects of the convention.  Perhaps we were just very lucky, but the problems we encountered were minimal and the fun we had was maximum.

The first celebrity we saw was legendary wrestler Hacksaw Jim Duggan.  We talked about his book, Hacksaw: The Jim Duggan Story, and his career.  I even joined him in his trademark “Hoooooooooo!”  How cool is that?!

We talked to Ernest L. Thomas, perhaps best known for his role as Raj on tv’sWhat’s Happening!!  Thomas was so genuinely nice and funny.

Two other long ago tv favorites included Jon Provost, who played Timmy onLassie, and Parker Stevenson from The Hardy Boys.  Both were awesome with their fans.

On the other end of so many classic tv sitcoms is Mark Rothman.  He talked to us about his lengthy career and his unfilmed script for Laverne and Shirley.

Curtis Armstrong had some success on tv (including on Moonlighting), but he is perhaps best known for his role as “Booger” in Revenge of the Nerds.  Curtis is back with the Nerds and he talked to us about everything.

No trip to the MCCC is complete without seeing Rachael Adams, Detroit’s very own.  The lovely model talked to us about her career and her charity work, including the upcoming Ride for Autism.  She is so super sweet!

We reconnected with some of our favorite artists including Sara RichardChrissie Zullo and Robert A. Kraus (aka RAK).  We also reconnected with author Dirk Manning.  Each gave us an update on their latest projects and RAK gave me a big surprise, a Superfreek (his unique creations) caricature of me!

We also saw Lauren Holly, one of my all time favorites.  Holly remembered me from an interview I did with her at a different convention.  She was as lovely and nice as last time!

One last group of celebrities I need to mention is Detroit’s very own Seth Gold, Les Gold and Bobby from tv’s Hardcore Pawn.  All that was missing was Ashley.  Still, the three were very fan-friendly and fun.

There were so many other fun and interesting celebrities, authors, artists and more, but I could not name all of them.  For my review, I rate the MCCC 2013 very highly.  We made the trip from Chicago based on the guest list and the previous years of enjoyment at the MCCC.  We plan on being back next year for some more pop culture greatness!
