C.A.R.E. Animal Shelter to Open in Skokie

The Community Animal Rescue Effort will operate a facility just north of downtown Skokie.

SKOKIE, IL - The village of Skokie will soon see an animal shelter open just north of downtown.

The Community Animal Rescue Effort, the C.A.R.E. animal shelter, will have a space at the 4900 block of Main Street and the 8300 block of Niles Center Road after receiving approval on all measures of the project this week, the Skokie Review reported.

The property will have two buildings and two parking lots. One of the buildings can be leased out, but the facility holding the animal shelter will be tax-exempt.

Some concern over the property being taken off the tax rolls and the fear of a decline in property values were mentioned by some residents at an earlier plan commission meeting, but there were no detractors to the idea when it was unanimously approved by village trustees more recently.

The shelter most recently operated in Evanston, but was distanced from the city due to a disagreement on euthanasia practices.
