Camille Pissarro: Jewish Mentor to the French Impressionists

At NSSC, Northfield Location:

Claire Cross, M.A. Renaissance Art History, Univ. of Chicago

Camille Pissarro, born of a Sephardic or 'Morrano' father in the West Indies, is a paradigm of the struggling artist: soft-hearted revolutionary, founder and leader of the Impressionist movement. He was a pivotal supporter of Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Georges Seurat, Claude Monet, Paul Signac, Vincent van Gogh, and others. The first major Jewish painter, he was the last of the rebel Impressionists to gain recognition. A contemporary remarked "No one was kinder than Pissarro ... a wise and appreciative Jew." Hear of his loves, life, and times, and see beautiful images of his evolving style as well as works of his fellow Impressionists.
