Car Struck After Driving Onto Yellow Line Tracks: Police

Police said the driver went around lowered crossing gates before a southeastbound CTA Yellow Line train hit the vehicle.

SKOKIE, IL — A collision involving a CTA Yellow Line train and a vehicle suspended service Tuesday afternoon in Skokie.

Skokie emergency personnel were called to the 8400 block of Niles Center Road at 12:58 p.m. Tuesday.

Police determined in a preliminary investigation that a vehicle traveling northeastbound on Niles Center Road entered the railroad tracks after disregarding lowered crossing gates and activated warning signals.

The vehicle was then struck by a southeastbound train on the Yellow Line tracks, according to the police.

No injuries were reported for the train operator, the train passengers or the driver of the vehicle. The train operator was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

The collision led to a suspension of CTA Yellow Line service following the crash and the investigation that followed. The train reopened later Tuesday afternoon.
